A cross-section of the newly-inducted Doctors

During the swearing-in/induction on Thursday at the permanent site of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Tanko Shaya, charged the newly-inducted doctors to remember one thing – their professional call, which is “to serve humanity.”

He further urged them to keep this as their focal point, no matter what comes from the environment outside there, saying, “because you will be determined to serve humanity.”

The VC was represented by Prof. Nuhu Gworgwor, who is Dean, Faculty of Agriculture.

Speaking also at the event, Provost of the College of Health Science of the University, Prof. Caleb Mpyet, said the college accreditation has been fully restored, both the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

He told the newly-inducted doctors that they are a privileged few to get the admissions out of hundreds applications, and so they should be grateful to God.

According to him, the new doctors must recognize the fact that, they were one of the very best students that applied to the University of Jos, adding that, “We are confident of the training that we give our students, because our graduated students from UNIJOS’ College of Health Science stand conspicuous wherever they are called upon to serve.

“We also believe that, as you start to practice as a person, you are going to build from the training you have received. You are going to encounter conditions you have never seen as students; but we expect you to excel, expect you to do your best and to give your patience.”

The Provost further reminded them that, they are expected to provide care, healing; and their intention should be harmless to the patient and should save lives.

He urged the new doctors that, religion or politics should not come into practice and whatever they do should eliminate pains from the patient.

Also, the Registrar Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Fatima Kyari (who was also represented) reminded the doctors of the code of conduct before the induction, saying, “among which is the health and the well-being of my patients, which will be the first condition, and respect the autonomy and dignity of my patients; and I will maintain the utmost respect for human being, among others.”
