The Plateau State Project Coordinator of SDGs, Mrs Nanbam Esther Dajuma Lot, says Plateau State, under the visionary leadership of Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has made significant strides towards the realization of the SDGs.
According to her, Governor Mutfwang’s administration has prioritized sustainable development through initiatives that address poverty, hunger, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and strong institutions for peace and justice.
“As we join the global community in commemorating the 2024 United Nations Day, it is important to reflect on the significance of this day and its alignment with our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, she stated.
“The United Nations Day serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to create a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world. This year, we are particularly mindful of the growing challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and the urgent need for action to safeguard our planet for future generations.
“The ‘Time is Now’ mantra of his administration continues to partner with the United Nations and other international agencies to implement projects that promote climate resilience, economic empowerment, and social development across the state,” she said.
According to her, they recognize that climate change remains one of the greatest threats to humanity, adding that the State Government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to combat environmental degradation through aforestation programs, sustainable agricultural practices, and climate-smart infrastructure.
She said, “These initiatives align with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and reflect our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for the State.
Mrs Lot noted that, “The promotion of human rights, gender equality, and social justice is at the heart of our development agenda, and we are working tirelessly to ensure that all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background, have equal access to opportunities and resources.
“We are advancing SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by fostering inclusivity, peace-building, and the protection of human rights in our communities. These efforts are crucial for building a harmonious and equitable society where every citizen can thrive,” she stated.
The Project Coordinator buttressed that, “As we celebrate this United Nations Day, we call on all the people of Plateau State to embrace actionable attitudes that foster sustainable change.
“We must recognize that true development can only be achieved when we all take responsibility for our actions – whether it be through conserving the environment, supporting gender equality, advocating for social justice, or promoting peace,” she urged.
According to her, “Our individual and collective actions are essential in driving the transformative change that the SDGs represent.
“The task before us is urgent, but with dedication and collaboration we can build a Plateau State that not only achieves the SDGs but also sets an example of sustainable development for Nigeria and beyond. “Let us continue to work together towards a more just, peaceful, and prosperous future,” she said.
