The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed, and regrets, to inform the general public of a tragic attack on a bus conveying passengers at Dungus, Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area.
The Command said its received a distress report on 13th September 2026, at about 19:45pm that unidentified gunmen, operating on a motorcycle, had opened fire on a Toyota bus, with Registration Number BUU 621 ZL, while conveying passengers to Jos.
A statement was signed and issued to newsmen in Jos by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Alfred Alabo, of Plateau State Police Command Jos.
Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, psc, immediately mobilised a Team of Mobile Police personnel, Tactical Teams, Homicide Detectives and Forensic Experts from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to the scene.
Regrettably, seven (7) persons were confirmed dead at the scene, while two (2) others, who sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention, subsequently gave up the ghosts, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine (9).
While the Command commiserates with families of the deceased and the entire residents of the State, CP Faniyan also condemned the act in its totality, describing it as “callous,” while praying that God grants the souls of the departed peaceful rest and their families comfort, strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“In this line, the Commissioner of Police has launched a total and vigorous man-hunt for the criminals, and charged all Policemen as well as appealed to other sister security agencies for synergy to work assiduously to ensure the murderers are brought to justice.
“The Command hereby reminds members of the public that the ban on commercial motorcycle operators within areas comprising the Greater Jos Master Plan remains in force, and will be enforced totally and diligently. Similarly, operators of commercial motorcycles, also known as “Okada” or “Going” will be made to face the full weight of the law.”
CP Faniyan urged the members of the public not to panic but continue to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons or group’s activities to the Police or other security agencies.
