The paramount traditional ruler of Otukpo Kingdom, Chief John Eimonye, the Otukpo Odu, has ordered all herders to vacate every part of Otukpo Kingdom, with immediate effect, following a deadly attack on Nobi Village in Otukpo District, Benue State, on Sunday.
The directive was issued in response to the tragic incident, which reportedly claimed several lives and has heightened tensions across the community.
According to community sources, the attack on Nobi Village sparked outrage and fear among residents, prompting the Traditional Council to take decisive action to protect lives and property within the kingdom.
“The decision reflects growing concerns over security and the protection of residents,” a source close to the palace said.
The Otukpo Odu said the safety of indigenes can no longer be compromised, and directed that all herders currently residing or grazing in any part of Otukpo Kingdom must leave without delay.
Community members have thrown their weight behind the order, calling on security agencies and relevant government authorities to take swift action to restore peace, ensure justice for the victims of the Nobi attack, and prevent further violence.
“The people are grieving and they want to see concrete steps. We cannot continue to bury our people and wait,” one community leader said.
As of press time, authorities were yet to issue a comprehensive official statement on the attack. Police and other security agencies are expected to continue investigations into the incident to identify the perpetrators and ascertain the full casualty figure.
The latest order adds to mounting pressure on state and federal authorities to address persistent clashes and insecurity in Benue communities, particularly in the Otukpo axis, which has witnessed repeated attacks in recent months.
Recalled that ban on open grazing of cattle in Benue State, in its entirety, was set up under the immediate past administration of Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom.
