The Plateau State Government has observed the Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD), a day which is also simply known as “Remembrance Day,” and is observed on 15 January to commemorate fallen heroes of the Nigerian Army.
The occasion is also meant to honor veterans of the World War I and II as well as the Nigerian Civil War, in 2024. The name was changed to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.”
This is to celebrate members of the Armed Forces still serving, and remember the fallen heroes; thus, correcting the notion that the day is meant mainly for the fallen heroes.
Our correspondent reports that, prayers were offered for the dead, serving men, the State and the Country at large; and also the laying of wreaths by the Governor, Speaker, Commissioner of Police, GOC and the Gbong Gwom Jos, among others.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the ceremony of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, Governor Mutfwang of Plateau State promised to improve welfare of legionnaires.
While assuring to devote time, attention and resources to ensure their well-being, the governor added that, in order to kick-start this initiative, he has approved free transportation for seniors aged 70yrs and above.
He acknowledged the importance of remembering the sacrifices of security personnel, who risk their lives to protect Nigeria’s citizens, and commended their gallantry and extended his respect to those, who have served, retired, or paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The event, held at the JD Gowlk Secretariat Round About, was attended by dignitaries, including the GOC 3 Div, Chairman of Legionnaires in Plateau State, and the Commissioner of Police.
Highlights of the occasion were the release of pigeons – symbolizing freedom and peace, the laying of wreaths and 3 gun shots in respect of the fallen heroes.
