JOS: The Rwang Pam Township Stadium’s seating capacity will be expanded, from 4,500 to over 10,000, while the remodeling will conform to international specifications as it is being renovated.
During an inspection visit by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Plateau State Governor expressed concern over the slow pace of renovation work at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos.
While the governor tasked the contractor handling the project to expedite efforts and ensure the facility meets international standards, he equally emphasized the urgency of completing the upgrade to position Plateau State as a viable host for national and continental sporting events.
Addressing the project team on-site, the governor explained that the ongoing remodeling of Rwang Pam Stadium is a temporary intervention, pending the completion of the more expansive Zaria Road Stadium.
He revealed that the state’s ambition is to host high-profile football matches, including those involving the Super Eagles, as well as tournaments organized by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“At the moment, the pace of work is slower than expected. I urge the contractor to step up his game. We need this stadium delivered as soon as possible,” the governor said.
He further advised the contractors to increase the number of workers on-site and work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to swiftly address any technical or administrative issues that could stall progress.
“You don’t need to wait until things get bad before asking for help. The Ministry is available to support you whenever challenges arise,” he advised.
The governor also hinted at a follow-up visit within two weeks, stressing that future inspections would be unannounced to get a more accurate assessment of progress.
“You were aware I was coming today, and clearly a lot of work went into preparing for this visit. But next time, there will be no announcement,” he warned.
Governor Mutfwang noted that the completion of the stadium is more than just a physical project because it represents Plateau’s determination to become a hub for top-tier sports in Nigeria.
“By the grace of God, once this stadium is completed, Plateau State will be able to host the Super Eagles. That is our goal. So, please, don’t disappoint us,” he charged.
The governor was conducted round the facility by Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Sylvanus Dongtoe, Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Hon. Ibrahim Ashoms and representatives of the contracting firm, REFORM Group, who showcased the level of progress achieved so far.
Arc. Dongtoe disclosed that the stadium’s seating capacity will be expanded, from 4,500 to over 10,000, and that the remodeling will conform to international specifications.
According to him, the scope of the project includes: “Conversion of the existing gymnasium into modern players’ changing rooms; Roof covering of the spectator stands (left and right wings); Installation of artificial turf on the football pitch; Laying of a 5-lane synthetic athletic track; Construction of an additional spectator stand; Building of an enclosed VIP booth with modern conveniences; Installation of an electronic scoreboard; Floodlights and public address system; Borehole and water tank relocation.
The Rwang Pam Township Stadium renovation is a key component of Governor Mutfwang’s broader infrastructure renewal agenda, which aims to revitalize public facilities across Plateau State for recreational and economic growth.
