Eagle Brain Human Rights Organization (EB-HRO) has condemned the continued detention of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, calling it a “threat to freedom of expression and democratic accountability” in Nigeria.
In a press statement issued on Monday, 30 June 2026, in Kaduna, and signed by its Chairman/CEO, Comrade Daniel Ejembi, the group said every Nigerian is entitled to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and due process, under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and international human rights treaties to which Nigeria is a party.
The organization argued that using detention in response to criticism of public officials “sets a dangerous precedent for civic space and democratic accountability in Nigeria.”
Eagle Brain is, therefore, urging relevant authorities to immediately release Sowore, if no credible, lawful charges exists, or charge him promptly before a competent court and grant him access to legal representation, family and medical care, if there is a lawful basis to do so.
The group also called on the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no citizen is held beyond the period allowed by law without trial.
“We remain committed to defending the rights of all Nigerians to speak, associate, and seek redress without fear of arbitrary arrest,” Comrade Ejembi stated.
He urged the government to act swiftly to protect constitutional freedoms and to demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to justice and human rights.
The activist, therefore, demanded the appearance of Comrade Sowore in competent court as earlier scheduled, unhurt, adding that anything untoward would be viewed as unjust and tantamount personal vindictiveness on freedom of expression of individuals and Nigerians.
