The Plateau State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has joined the nationwide strike action directed by the National Executive Council (NEC), which has asked all Nigerian workers to withdraw their services, effective from 12 midnight of 13th November, 2023.

As early as 9am, the gate of the State Secretariat was seeing under lock with the NLC/TUC State EXCO at the premises to make sure workers did not go in.

But, some workers were lingering at the premises, thinking that the strike action may not hold, after all.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat premises, the NLC Chairman Plateau State, Comdr Eugene Manji, said “Labour is fighting the injustice done by Governor of Imo State for mishandling the President. We are defending our leader.

According to him, Once, if something happens to our leaders, we are not safe. Even journalists were beating and their cameras were destroyed. So, what are we saying – if a leader is not safe, you are not safe, and the masses are not safe, too, in the country.”

He stressed that, “The only institution that is protecting the masses is the NLC/TUC and the only institution that can checkmate Government is Labour; and, if they kill the Labour then, nobody can stand and no masses can stand.

“So, what we are saying, we are doing it for ourselves; whatever people want to say let them say. They can go to hell; what we are doing we are defending ourselves.”

According to him, “Do we have a democracy? We are not against his government. He went ahead to conduct election; we are only against the injustice, we are not against him; we are the voices of the voices and what we are doing is to protect,” he noted.

Comdr. Manji said “Labour is fighting for the injustices of their members and their welfare. It is unfortunate that no one has come out to say something or apologize; and if it were other countries, they would have come out and apologize.

“Nigeria is the only country that takes Labour for granted,” he said, while pointing out that, if the Government didn’t answer their demands, they will continue with the strike action, adding, “And they are losing billions (of Naira) everyday.”
