The former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, Naanlong Daniel, of the APC representing Mikang Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, has been elected as the new Speaker to the Plateau State House of Assembly in the 10th Assembly.

He was elected, following the resignation of the erstwhile Speaker, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, who resigned on Wednesday as Speaker of the 10th Assembly.

The election took place on Wednesday during an emergency closed-door meeting with the former Speaker of the Assembly, Gabriel Dewan, and other lawmakers. 

Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan had earlier on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2025, tendered his resignation letter, which was addressed to Members of the State Assembly.

In his letter of resignation, Rt. Hon. Dewan appreciated his colleagues for the confidence reposed on him to serve as Speaker of the House and their support to his leadership all through. 

He also thanked the Governor of the State for the cordial working relationship between the Legislative arm and the Executive in the state, and also extended his heartfelt gratitude to Staff of the Assembly, who assured of working for peace in the state and beyond.

The former Speaker, who is the only member representing the YPP party in the House, has been a Speaker since 2024, until his resignation.
