A coalition of over 20 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has shelved its planned peaceful protest earlier scheduled for October 1st, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, citing ongoing strategic responses by the Federal and State Governments and security agencies.

The coalition, which disclosed this in a press briefing on October 1st, 2026, in Kaduna, attributed its decision in “upholding peace and security” in the State.

According to the statement jointly signed by leaders of the coalition, including Isah Abubakar, National President of Northern Youth Council of Nigeria; Hussaini Shuaibu, President of Arewa Youths Alliance for Progress and Development; Kamilu Muhammed Tambuwal, Deputy President of Youth Movement for Peace, and others, the group had initially planned a peaceful protest to highlight the persistent development deficit in the nation, from 1960 to date.

“From 1960 to the present day, under both military and civilian administrations, Nigerians have endured systemic stagnation and underdevelopment.

“However, having considered the enormous strategic response being put in place by the Federal and State Governments as well as security agencies, despite the undaunted challenges, the organizations decided to brief the press,” they said.

The coalition commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, for consistently giving their state commands all necessary operational support, resources and leadership required to protect lives and property across the country, particularly in Kaduna State.

“We equally appreciate the proactive engagement, swift action, and open dialogue demonstrated by the Officers and Men of the Kaduna State Police Command and the Kaduna State Command of the DSS during our engagements,” it added.

The CSOs also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his initiative in securing the North and the country at large, urging him to maintain and scale-up support for all national security agencies to effectively address emerging threats.

They further acknowledged the Kaduna State Government, under Senator Uba Sani, for its ongoing efforts and contributions towards reinforcing security in the state and region.

The coalition advised politicians and political actors to obey the law, respect public order and refrain from conduct(s) that could breach the peace, noting that achieving public good requires collective effort.

“We urge all citizens to support our security forces in upholding law and order. While our mandate to hold leadership accountable remains unbroken, we choose structured dialogue as the primary vehicle for national progress today,” the statement concluded.
