The Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), in Birnin-Gwari LGA of Kaduna State, has alerted government and security agencies of the renewed attacks by criminal elements, warning that the gains made in restoring peace over the last two years are under threat.
In a statement signed by union Chairman, Dr. Isah Muhammad, BEPU noted that relative peace had returned to many parts of the emirate through joint efforts of government, security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders.
He however noted that some armed group members have refused to surrender weapons or honour peace agreements.
The group reported incidents of farmland invasions, intimidation of farmers, and forceful seizure of motorcycles and mobile phones, heightened anxiety following the killing of Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver, who was attacked and killed three days ago, around Buruku in Chikun LGA, while travelling from Kaduna to Birnin-Gwari.
The Union stated that the killing triggered reprisal attacks where three Fulani individuals were assaulted before security personnel intervened. “The victims were treated and discharged, with no deaths recorded in the reprisal,” it stated.
“BEPU strongly frowns at all forms of violence, reprisal attacks and actions capable of reigniting conflict,” Dr. Muhammad stated, adding that the majority of residents desire peace, regardless of ethnic background.
It appealed for urgent government action to stop rising banditry around eastern Birnin-Gwari areas like Kuyello; end seizure of motorcycles and phones from farmers; recover illegal firearms; review the peace process; increase intelligence and patrols on farms and major roads during the rainy season; and reassure farmers to discourage self-help.
BEPU stressed that agriculture drives Birnin-Gwari’s economy and contributes to food security in Kaduna State, neighbouring states and Niger Republic, adding, “Any return to insecurity would have regional consequences.”
The group also urged residents to remain patient and vigilant, urging politicians to avoid exploiting the situation ahead of 2027 elections, and motorists to avoid night travel and obey security advisories.
BEPU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting lawful security initiatives to keep Birnin-Gwari on the path of stability and development.
