The Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, in Plateau State, has observed that society often imposes stereotypes and norms that hinder women’s progress – by not investing in women.
“We challenge these barriers and pave the way for a more inclusive and equal world. When women are given the platform and support to break free from societal expectations, they can excel in their chosen fields and inspire others to do same.”
Chairperson of the Commission in Plateau State, Barr. Olivia Dazyem, was speaking at the International Women’s Day by Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Plateau State chapter, in Jos on Wednesday, with this year’s theme: ‘Inspiring Inclusion: Accelerating Progress and Importance of Investing in Women.’
According to her, “By inspiring inclusion, we open doors for women to explore their true potential. When women are provided with equal opportunities in education, employment and leadership roles, they can actively contribute their unique perspectives and talents to various fields.
“This inclusivity does not only benefit women individually, but also fosters innovation, collaboration and the overall growth of the society,” Barr. Dazyem stated.
The chairperson further explained that, “Investing in women is not just a matter of social justice, but it is also smart, economically, and leads to increased productivity, higher GDP, and economic growth.
“When women are financially independent, they can contribute to household income, invest in their families’ well-being, and drive entrepreneurial ventures that create jobs and stimulate economic development,” she said.
She noted, too, that “Inclusion goes beyond gender equality; it encompasses diversity in all its forms. By investing in women, we promote a more inclusive society that appreciates and embraces difference.
“When women from diverse backgrounds are given equal opportunities, it enriches workplace, educational institutions and communities with varied perspectives, ideas, and experiences. This diversity fosters creativity, innovation, and a more holistic approach to problem-solving,” the chairperson said.
According to her, “Inspiring inclusion and investing in women have a profound impact on future generations. When young girls see women breaking barriers and achieving success, they are encouraged to dream big and believe in their own potentials by creating role models and mentors.
“We empower young women to pursue their passion, overcome obstacles, and become leaders in their chosen fields,” Barr. Dazyem stated.
Speaking earlier, NAWOJ Plateau State Chairperson, Nene Dung, said “Women have made their mark in different fields of endeavours, ranging from engineering to the economy, entertainment, business, journalism, broadcasting; and we have women, who have achieved in different ways.
“It is our responsibility to escalate women issues in the media space and report all there is to report, in order to saturate the airwaves with relevant information about women in governance, business and every endeavour,” she urged.
