As Nigerians mark this year’s “June 12” Democracy Day, the Kaduna State Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) State Level Support Working Group has called for stronger institutions, the rule of law, and accountability as true foundations of democracy.

In a press statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Dr. Terngu Gwar, the ACJL SLWG extended greetings to the government and people of Kaduna State and all Nigerians, saying the day honours the sacrifices of those who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance.

“Democracy represents more than the conduct of periodic elections. It embodies the principles of the rule of law, justice, accountability, transparency, participation, respect for human rights, and equal access to opportunities for all citizens,” Dr. Gwar stated.

He stressed that it is through these values that nations build strong institutions, foster social cohesion, and promote sustainable development.

The group described the Administration of Criminal Justice system as “occupying a strategic place” in the consolidation of democracy.

According to Dr. Gwar, a justice system that is fair, efficient, transparent, and accessible strengthens public confidence in government institutions and reinforces the principle that “no one is above the law.”

He said the effective implementation of the Kaduna State Administration of Criminal Justice Law remains critical to promoting justice, safeguarding the rights of victims and defendants, ensuring accountability, and enhancing public trust in democratic institutions.

“As stakeholders committed to criminal justice reforms in the state, the SLWG reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively with justice sector institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, the media and citizens to deepen reforms aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of justice administration,” he stated.

Dr. Gwar urged all Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, uphold the rule of law, reject all forms of violence and injustice, and actively participate in strengthening democratic institutions.

“Citizens have an important role to play in demanding accountability, respecting the rights of others, and contributing to the development of a just and equitable society,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to renew their collective resolve to build a country where justice is accessible to all, institutions function effectively and independently, and democracy delivers tangible benefits to every citizen.

“May the spirit of patriotism, unity, and service continue to guide us as we work together towards a more peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Nigeria,” he concluded, wishing all Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day.
