PLATEAU STATE – CLEEN Foundation has embarked on a two days’ brainstorming Workshop with media persons to delve into “conflict-sensitive journalism.”

During the sessions, which held at Crispan Hotel Jos, Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mr. Gad Peter, buttressed that, “As media practitioners, they are expected to bring unique perspectives and invaluable insights to the table, especially in how conflicts are reported and understood.

“Therefore, their voices are essential in ensuring that coverage is not only accurate and responsible but also empathetic and inclusive, and their work as journalists and media practitioners is not just about delivering news; it is about shaping narratives, influencing public perception and, ultimately, contributing to the resolution and mediation of conflicts.”

Mr. Gad Peter, with the support from UN Women from the Norway Embassy, stated that, “The objectives for the next 2 days will explore the principles of conflict-sensitive journalism and mediation – emphasizing the unique challenges and opportunities faced especially by women in this field.

“Understanding the intricate dynamics of conflicts will help them report in a manner that promotes peace and empathy, through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and real-world case studies,” he noted.

He said, “The aim is to equip you with the skills needed for responsible and effective conflict reportage, sharing experiences and best practices with fellow journalists will strengthen their ability to navigate the challenges of conflict reporting and enhance your professional growth.”

Mr. Gab Peter further explained that, “This workshop also provides a unique opportunity to build a ‘network of peers,’ who shares their commitment to responsible journalism.

“By sharing experiences and best practices, you can support each other in the challenging field of conflict reporting. I want to remind us all of the profound impact that responsible journalism can have,” he stated.

“As women in media, your reporting can shape narratives, influence public opinion, and contribute significantly to conflict resolution and peace-building. Let us embrace this responsibility with dedication and passion,” he said.

“Let us use this workshop as a stepping-stone to enhance our professional capabilities and make a positive difference through our work,” he added, and thanked the UN Women for support from the Norway Project.
