Following the recent fire incidence at Jos “Terminus Market,” the Plateau State Police Command has observed the recent rise in the activities of commercial motorcycle riders, also known as “Okada Riders” within the Jos/Bukuru metropolis, who continue to consistently violate the directive of the State Government placing a ban on their activities within the metropolis, as contained in the Plateau State Commercial Motorcycles (Prohibition) Law 2010.

The Police Command has also observed that some masked hoodlums have taken advantage of these activities and are using it as an avenue for executing various nefarious crimes within the State.

A statement to this effect was signed and issued to newsmen in Jos by the Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, on Wednesday in Jos.

According to the Command, “This has led to a rise in ‘One-Chance’ activities: stabbing, theft, snatching of phones, cars and other valuables from the peace loving citizens of Plateau State.

“On this note, the CP reiterates that the “Total Ban” on the activities of Commercial Motorcycles within the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis and the entire area covering the Jos Master Plan still remains in Force.

“The Command, therefore, issues a stern warning to the violators of this law, that we will not stand back and watch in expectation, as they turn Plateau State into a hub for criminal activities.

“He has also directed all DPOs, Tactical Team Commanders, and Patrol Teams to embark on patrol/raid activities and arrest both the operators, and those who patronize their services, impound their motorcycles, and charge them to court for prosecution.

“The Commissioner of Police also emphasizes that the implementation of this ban is in the interest of peace and safety of all Plateau residents, and not meant to intimidate or victimize any person or group of persons.

“He, therefore, advises all residents of the State to stay away from commercial motorcycles, especially those whose riders wear masks, in the interest of their own safety.

He also advices them to report the activities of such persons to any security agency, or call.

“We also encourage the good citizens of Plateau State to report any violation of human rights and unprofessional conduct of our officers in the course of implementing of this ban.”
