Group, under the auspices of ‘Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressive Union’ (BEPU), has called on government to take urgent action on the recent surge on violent bandits’ attacks in Birnin Gwari LGA of Kaduna State.
They made the call in a statement signed by the group’s Chairperson, Pharm. Jamila Sani, entitled: ‘Urgent Action Needed: Escalating Bandit Attacks in Birnin Gwari,’ made available to newsmen in Kaduna Monday.
BEPU stated that, “We write to urgently draw attention to the recent surge in violent assaults orchestrated by armed bandits in the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
“On Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, Ungwan Danko and Ungwan Kanawa of Dogondawa Ward bore the brunt of a devastating attack, resulting in the tragic loss of 23 lives.
“Barely 24 hours later, traders returning from the weekly market in Birnin Gwari Town faced ambush near Mararaban Agero, leading to the deaths of four vigilant members and the abduction of several others,” it stated.
According to BEPU, the community of Bagoma, a suburb of Birnin Gwari, is also grappling with a burgeoning humanitarian crisis as women, children and the elderly are forced into displacement due to the persistent threat of attacks.
“This displacement stems from at least three preceding assaults in the area, marked by kidnappings and fatalities,” it also stated.
The Union, however, commended the valiant efforts of the security personnel, including the Army, Air Force, Police, DSS, KADVS and Hunters, who have tirelessly fought against the armed bandits in Birnin Gwari.
According to them, the patriotic and selfless dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the lives and property of the Birnin Gwari citizens are truly commendable.
“While acknowledging the gallant efforts of both the community and government in supporting our brave men, we implore the relevant authorities to intensify and promptly execute decisive measures to quell this escalating threat.
“The people of Birnin Gwari languish in fear, underscoring the critical need for bolstered security measures to reinstate peace and stability in the region. We beseech the government to redouble its efforts in combating armed banditry and extend vital assistance to afflicted communities,” it noted.
“Meanwhile, on behalf of the Bimin Gwari community, Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union extends its heartfelt condolences to the Ameer of Birnin Gwari Emirate, Mal. Zubair Jibril Mai Gwari II, the Bimin Gwari Local Government Council, Kaduna State Government, and the families bereaved by the scourge of armed banditry and kidnappings.”
They also prayed fervently for Almighty Allaah’s forgiveness for the departed and for the strength to endure the loss. “For those injured, we wish them speedy recovery.”
