JOS: Plateau State’s Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, has disclosed that, “Information brings about development, and it promotes peaceful co-existence; and communication can destroy leadership, depending on how it is used.”
He said, “When information are not communicated rightly, you and I know the implications – once there are policies, there are ideas and are communicated to the right channel and ensure that it reaches the target audience and makes the necessary impact on the society.”
The commissioner made this assertion when members of the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), Jos Archdiocese, led by the Association’s Chairman, Roland Longs, paid him a visit in his office to intimate him with their activities coming up soon.
Dr. Shurkuk assured of the Ministry’s partnership and collaboration to ensure that whatever is coming up from the Ministry is properly communicated to the people, not just only Plateau State but to the outside communities, so that they would be able to know what is happening.
“So, your role in the society cannot be overemphasizes, in the circular world and also in the religious world; so, you know how very religious we are in this country.”
Speaking earlier, Chairman CAMPAN, Roland Longs, said, there visit was to share with commissioner an initiative of profound importance, and to formally intimate him of their forthcoming National Conference with the theme, ‘The Role of Communication in Strengthening Religious Tolerance in Nigeria.’
He said, “This significant national event is scheduled to take place right here, in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025,” saying that, “the Ministry of Science and Technology holds a pivotal position in the modern world.”
According to him, “In this era of rapid technological advancement, particularly in communications, our role in harnessing scientific innovation for societal progress is undeniable.
“The very tools and platforms we, as media practitioners, utilize daily are products of the advancements, championed by ministries like yours.
“We believe there is a fundamental and inextricable link between science, technology, and the objective of fostering religious tolerance. In an age where digital platforms can either be tools for misinformation and division or powerful conduits for education, dialogue, and understanding, the responsible application of science and technology becomes paramount,” chairman explained.
Mr. Longs stated further that, “The conference is aimed to critically examine how communication, in its various forms – traditional, digital, and interpersonal – can be effectively deployed to bridge religious divides, counter extremist narratives, intra-interfaith, intra-interdenominational harmony and build a more harmonious and tolerant society in Nigeria.
He disclosed that, “We will be bringing together media professionals, religious leaders, academics, tech innovators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to brainstorm actionable strategies.
“That is where your Ministry’s invaluable expertise and support comes in. We are here to seek your partnership and support in various capacities.”
