Hope has dashed for electric consumers around Ungwan Boro New Extension community and environs, following the vandalization of major cables of transformer supplying electricity to the numerous residents of the area located in Sabon Tasha, Chikun LGA of Kaduna State.

Some of the abandoned, vandalized cables.

The incident, which occurred last Tuesday night, left several amoured cables cut and stolen from Ungwan Boro 4 transformer, around ECWA Hausa, by the vandals suspected to be people familiar with electricity installations.

Locals’ eyewitness sources, who gathered around the vandalized transformer Tuesday morning, confirmed that the incident happened in the night of Tuesday after power outage, by people also familiar with timetable of power supply in the area.

Contacted for clarification, the Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KAEDCO) could not respond until the time of filing these reports.

Our correspondent, however, reported that he earlier informed KAEDCO about the development with visual of some of the abandoned cables by the vandals.

“Ungwan Boro 4 transformer was heavily vandalized last night. All the amoured cables completely cut and carted away by the vandals, leaving a few hanging,” he stated.”

Our reporter further informed the electric company that residents of the area, who gathered around the transformer, anticipated prolonged power outage due to the vandals, appealing for KAEDCO’s immediate intervention.

“Some of the few in-coma and amoured cables left behind in the transformer were later seen removed by good community coordinator and electric staffs, for safe keeping, to avoid being stolen.

“The in-coma cables that supply light to amoured cables have been removed completely much later, for fear that the vandals might launch a comeback for them – as experienced in some communicates.”

Some residents told our reporters of alleged vandalization of several other transformers in the areas.

Recalled that, over 300 disengaged staffs of KAEDCO recently protested ‘unjust disengagement and non-payment of benefits for too long.’
