Three (3) persons were reportedly killed in Chwel Nyango community of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday, while returning from work at a mining site.

Plateau State Police Command confirmed that the incident occurred in Chwel Nyango Community of Jos South Local Government Area, on 3rd April, 2026 at about 09:20pm.

A statement, issued by the Command’s PPRO, SP Alfred Alabo, indicated that the Command received a distress call reporting that some unidentified armed assailants ambushed and opened fire on a group of individuals who were returning from work at a mining site, resulting in the death of three (3) persons, while one (1) other sustained injuries. 

While in a swift response, the Commissioner of Police immediately deployed a Patrol Team, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) ‘B’ Division Bukuru, to the scene. 

On arrival, the injured victim was promptly evacuated to a hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. 

“In this line, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Bassey Ewah, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire Chwel Nyango Community over this unfortunate and senseless loss of lives.”

In response to the incident and as part of proactive measures to safeguard lives and properties, the Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate enforcement of a statewide Ban on Night Grazing and Night Mining activities.

He also reiterated that the Total Ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis still remains in force. 

According to him, “This directive is aimed solely towards enhancing public safety and preventing further breakdown of law and order, and not to impede citizens’ lawful means of livelihood.

“In view of the ongoing Easter celebration, the CP has also placed a ban on the activities of commercial Tricycles also known as “Keke-NAPEP” on Sunday, the 5th of April, 2026.

He urges residents to comply with these bans and avoid unnecessary movements, especially at night.  

Residents are also advised to report any suspicious persons or activities in their environments to the nearest security agency or call the numbers provided, while assuring that, the Plateau State Police Command remains committed to maintaining peace, law, and order across the State.

“We have, therefore, intensified security presence in the affected area with a view to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime and make sure that they face the full weight of the law,” he said.
