JOS: Governor Mutfwang of Plateau State has asserted that, “Universal Health Coverage is not just a goal but a solemn promise – to ensure that every resident in the State has access to quality, affordable, and timely healthcare services without facing financial hardship.”
The governor made the disclosure, while declaring open of the 11th Plateau State Council on Health, with the theme, ‘Repositioning the Plateau State Health System Towards Universal Health Coverage’ (UHC), on Tuesday at Crispan Hotel Jos.
He further highlighted the progress being made in expanding and equipping primary healthcare infrastructure, increasing enrollment in the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA), and improving the availability of essential medicines.
He stressed that, “The challenges remain, including underserved rural communities, distribution and retention of health workers, and fragmented health data systems,” adding that, “There is the need for honest reflection and decisive action to address these challenges.”
While noting of his commitment to ensuring that health remains at the heart of the state’s development agenda, Gov Mutfwang further urged all stakeholders to work together to build a healthier Plateau State.
He emphasized that achieving Universal Health Coverage requires a collective effort and commitment to repositioning the health system. “Let us rise to reposition the Plateau State health system – not just for today, but for generations to come,” he stated.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, highlighted the significance of the Council and the progress made in the health sector, saying, “The Council’s aim is to reposition the health system to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
“We are not just shaping policy – we are shaping lives; the decisions we will take here will impact generations to come. Therefore, let us rise to this occasion with courage, with collaboration, and with clarity of purpose,” he stressed.
The 11th Plateau State Council on Health meeting promises to be a landmark event in the state’s health sector, with stakeholders coming together to chart a bold and transformative path towards sustainable solutions.
A representative of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Omotosho Oyeole, emphasized the importance of Universal Health Coverage and the need for a collective effort to achieve it.
